Well, wow. I launched this blog exactly 5 years ago today.
It’s been a lot of fun, a great learning experience, and it really has helped keep me inspired to write fiction and continue to improve.
But things change.
When I started this blog, I had already been blogging about writing fairly regularly on my personal author page, and decided to shift away from blogging there and launch this site as not only a blog about writing, but also a resource for new and aspiring writers.
And it really has been great. As with everything, there have been ups and down, but the positive have very much outweighed the negatives. One of the biggest achievements was stepping out of my comfort zone and, along with my friend Scott Michael Childers, starting the Write Good Books Podcast. Our first two years, we never missed a schedule.
I know this is starting to sound like an obituary for the blog, but it’s not. It’s, well, I guess you could say it’s an extended vacation. Anyone who has been here lately can see that things have been very quiet as of late. I have a million reason for that, but one of the biggest is the card game. I started my independent game design company, D52 Gaming, this year and spend most of the year developing the first game, 52 Dragons.
I launched the Kickstarter campaign to help get the first game launched, and low and behold, it did! I, had no idea what I was getting into with that. It was such a great learning experience, but who would have known that it would literally take four hours a day marketing. We’ll have to do a podcast about that actually, since a great number of authors have used Kickstarter to launch their books.
Oh, and since I brought up the podcast. I don’t plan to quit that. I know we’ve missed quite a few episodes as of late, but I’ll be in touch with Scott and we can hopefully get our feet back on the ground. Might shake up the format a bit….who knows?
But as for other stuff, I’m planning to really step back from writing fiction and blogging this year. I’ve been writing fiction for over 10 years now, and will always consider myself a writer first. (Okay, actually I’m a parent and a husband first, but as far as extra-curricular activities are concerned, it’s writing.)
Anyhow, in 2020, I plan to devote most of the free time to making the gaming company work. I’ve got a whole bunch of big ideas, but I just can’t do it all. So, like I said, writing and blogging are going to have to take a back seat to parenting and gaming. And I’m okay with that.
So I know this isn’t my typical New Year’s post, but I really do want thank you all for the support you’ve given me in the last five years. I’m not going away for good, either. I’ll link to the podcast here, and will still drop by for the occasional writing post, Five Links Friday, or other life updates. Feel free to sign up for the mailing list if you’d like to keep up to date on stuff.
Otherwise, have an incredible 2020, and I hope you reach all of your goals in writing and life.
